Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was social conscience and advised DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay who was born together with her parents in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there were later the inspiration to write a script for a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she obtained qualifications in English and African American Studies. When she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay began to consider producing broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to sit at the home of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to look through their trash. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a PR professional in an unassuming production studio after college. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of networks for promotion and lifestyle, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
